Ni abundance in the core of the Perseus Cluster: an answer to the significance of resonant scattering

چکیده

Using an XMM-Newton observation of the Perseus cluster we show that the excess in the flux of the 7-8 keV line complex previously detected by ASCA and BeppoSAX is due to an overabundance of Nickel rather than to an anomalously high Fe Heβ/Fe Heα ratio. This observational fact leads to the main result that resonant scattering, which was assumed to be responsible for the supposed anomalous Fe Heβ/Fe Heα ratio, is no longer required. The absence of resonant scattering points towards the presence of significant gas motions (either turbulent or laminar) in the core of the Perseus cluster. 0 Central Elemental Abundance Ratios in the Perseus Cluster : Resonant Scattering or SN Ia Enrichment ?

We have determined elemental abundance ratios in the core of the Perseus cluster for several elements. These ratios indicate a central dominance of SN Ia ejecta similar to that found for A496, A2199 and A3571 (Dupke & White 2000a). Simultaneous analysis of ASCA spectra from SIS1, GIS 2&3 shows that the ratio of Ni to Fe abundances is ∼ 3.4 ± 1.1 times Solar within the central 4. This ratio is c...

XMM-Newton Observations of the Perseus Cluster II: Evidence for Gas Motions in the Core

The 5-9 keV spectrum of the inner ∼100 kpc of the Perseus cluster measured by XMMNewton can be well described by an optically thin plasma emission model as predicted by the APEC code, without any need for invoking a strong Ni overabundance or the effects of resonant scattering. For the strongest 6.7 keV line of He-like iron, the optical depth of the cluster, calculated using observed density, t...

How Abundant is Iron in the Core of the Perseus Cluster?

The analysis of Perseus data collected with the Medium Energy Concentrator Spectrometer (MECS) on board Beppo-SAX shows that the ratio of the flux of the 8 keV line complex (dominated by Fe Kβ emission) over the 6.8 keV line complex (dominated by Fe Kα emission) is significantly larger than predicted by standard thermal emission codes. Moreover the analysis of spatially resolved spectra shows t...

Resonant scattering in the Perseus Cluster: spectral model for constraining gas motions with Astro-H

X-ray spectra from cores of galaxy clusters can be strongly distorted by resonant scattering of line photons, affecting metal abundance and gas velocity measurements. We introduce simulated spectral models that take into account the resonant scattering effect, radial variations of thermodynamic properties of the hot gas, projection effects and small-scale isotropic gas motions. The key feature ...

Mapping small - scale temperature and abundance structures in the core of the Perseus cluster

We report further results from a 191 ks Chandra observation of the core of the Perseus cluster , Abell 426. The emission-weighted temperature and abundance structure is mapped detail. There are temperature variations down to ∼ 1 kpc in the brightest regions. Globally, the strongest X-ray surface brightness features appear to be caused by temperature changes. Density and temperature changes cons...
